Fanciful “Fancy Animals” Takes over the Garment District
Gotham’s ongoing parade of public art projects has recently been joined by a procession of another sort: a piece called A Fancy Animal Carnival. GARMENT DISTRICT — Pandas, and camels, and cats, oh my!A series of huge, colorful sculptures resembling fantastical versions of pandas, eagles, bulls, and other creatures appeared along Broadway over the weekend, dotting pedestrian plazas in the Garment District from 36th Street to 41st Street.The sculptures, which were unveiled on Tuesday, are the work of Hung Yi, a Taiwanese restaurateur, and will stand along Broadway through April 2017. 11 Large Scale-Scale Animal Sculptures Installed in Midtown Manhattan
A series of sculptures that promise to “captivate” New Yorkers until next spring debuted in the Garment District Tuesday. Called “Fancy Animal Carnival,” the 11-large scale animals sculptures, represent “a narrative, expressed through traditional Taiwanese symbols and motifs believed to bring luck. The painted patterns reflect on folk culture and religion, as well as the artist’s personal experiences and observations of people’s everyday lives,” according to a release. READ MORE

CHELSEA (WABC) — Julian Lennon has one of the most recognizable last names in music, but now, he is making a name for himself in the world of photography.
Julian Lennon was on the top of the charts 30 years ago and was nominated for a Grammy as best new artist. But in recent years, he has switched his focus. At the intersection of photography and philanthropy stands a man with one of the most famous names in rock, a guy who once sold millions of records himself. Julian Lennon says he will never stop making music, but making pictures has become his passion. “I really have fallen in love with photography,” he said. “And I also like to do as much as I can to help people.” He found a way to combine both when he traveled to Africa for a group called Charity Water. “To raise awareness and raise money for clean water wells in Ethiopia,” he said. Last February, Julian Lennon began a thousand-foot climb in the mountains of Ethiopia. His companions sped ahead, but the 51-year-old artist took his time, catching smaller details when he paused to catch his breath. “I just sat down, looked around and really absorbed it,” Lennon tells Rolling Stone. “Otherwise we would have gotten up to the top of the mountain, I’d have a nice view, take a few snaps and go back down.” READ MORE

Moby, 49, studied photography in college but didn’t start exhibiting pictures in galleries until 2010. The large color prints in this show revolve around a particular narrative concept: The idea that although few are aware of it, we already are living in a post-apocalyptic time. American musician Moby has a new photography exhibition on view in New York that portrays a conceptual, post-apocalyptic world. On view at Emmanuel Fremin Gallery, “innocents” explores the oddities in our society set against the rural backdrop of the artist’s Los Angeles home. This latest body of work is a shift in Moby’s style from documentation-based to conceptually-based photography. Gorgeous Aerial Shots of Beaches, Taken While Hanging From a Helicopter
Rose began the Up in the Air series while working as a photographer for the Kiteboarding World Cup. During one Eurocopter flight over Rio de Janeiro, he noticed how graphically interesting the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches looked. “It was so different than standing on the beach,” he says. Shot from a bird’s eye view, umbrellas, beach goers, and yachts are miniaturized and abstracted, and look like tiny toys used in a diorama. The candy-colored images offer an unusual glimpse into a day on the water, as we see only a general depiction of the beach yet its captured on a large scale. We aren’t offered many details, but still, there is a lot of energy in these photographs. Rose communicates leisure, and minuscule figures evoke the famous French post-impressionist “bathers” series by Cezanne. READ MORE
